Our Club

History

Mentone Golf Club began playing at a 12-hole golf course on privately owned land in Mentone (near the old race course) called “Braeside”. The Club was originally named “Springfield”. The private property was sold in 1953, and as a consequence the club was disbanded. In 1954 the new owners made the golf course available again to the club, it was reformed and renamed “Mentone Golf Club”.

At this time there were approximately 50 lady members. The first President of Mentone Golf Club was Mrs Hope Lemmon, who later became a Life Member of the Victorian Women’s Golf League. To help establish the Club, a loan of £25 was accepted from the men’s committee. At this time there was a strong association with the men’s committee, with monthly social dances organised as well as mixed foursomes competitions.

In 1960 “Braeside” was sold and the golf course was closed. As a consequence the club decided to move to its current location, Sandy Golf Links. The President at this time was Mrs Hazel Edmonds, who along with the Committee, steered the club through challenging times and laid strong foundations for growth and financial stability.

Mentone Golf Club has produced five VWGL Champion of Champions; won the VWGL “A” Grade Pennant flag in 1984 and the “D” Grade Pennant flag in 2001.

Our Club is an Incorporated Association with Rules, and affiliated with the Victorian Golf League.

Charity

Our Club has a strong ethos of charity and have for many years donated the proceeds of our charity day to Inclusion Melbourne (formerly Gawith Villa) to assist with their many programs supporting individuals with intellectual disability.

Today in 2025, we have reached an extraordinary 63 years of providing voluntary financial support to Inclusion Melbourne totalling a sum over $208,000. This unwavering committment has been acknowledged and celebrated by Inclusion Melbourne in their 2022 Impact Report which features Mentone Golf Club.

Read the feature article ‘Mentone Golf Club – Celebrating 60 years of support’.

Every year, our Club dedicates a competition day to the memory of Jarrod Lyle and help raise much-needed funds for Challenge, a charity devoted to supporting children and families living with cancer. We received a Certificate of Appreciation in 2020 2021 2022.

Participating in ‘Tee-Off’, Mentone Golf Club devotes one day a year in support for Breast Cancer Research Trials.  On this ‘Pink Day’, the club’s fundraising effort occurs in the form of a raffle for generously sized pink hampers and members are encouraged to dress in pink.

A certificate of Appreciation was received in 2023.
